The Admiral Benbow

Well known to many Memphians, you may be surprised on your next drive down Summer Avenue to discover that it to has slipped into Lost Memphis while you weren't looking. Proms, parties and professionals all often ended at the Admiral - seedy enough that a savvy professional could work unhampered but safe enough that most footloose young adults were not scared to walk to their car. It was borderline to be sure, and that was part of the mystique.

As happens many times is this age of cell phone with cameras, a few people managed to get some images of the end. A new strip center will likely be good for the area, but none of the flavor of the area will remain. 40 and 50 year old buildings aren't found on every corner, and the signs that fell with this building are likely the signs that were on it when you were a kid. Lost Memphis adds another name to the growing list.
