JUVENILE MURDER SUSPECT TRANSFERRED TO CRIMINAL COURT (NOVEMBER 6, 2002)

Memphis, TN – A Shelby County juvenile referee today granted the request of the District Attorney’s Office and ordered 14-year-old murder suspect DeAndre Kendall to be transferred to Criminal Court for trial as an adult. Kendall has been charged with first degree murder in the October 5, 2002 gang-related shooting death of 15-year-old William Hall. Following his order, Juvenile Court Referee Herbert J. Lane set bond for Hall at $100,000.

The victim’s body was found on October 6, 2002 on a bridge over a ditch near the Mall of Memphis. Kendall was arrested on October 7, 2002.

During today’s hearing, two witnesses testified that they, the victim and the defendant were all members of the Crips gang. The District Attorney’s Office Anti-Gang Unit is prosecuting this case.

Tennessee law states a person under the age of 18 convicted of first degree murder shall be punished by imprisonment for life with the possibility of parole.

The first degree murder charge is covered by the District Attorney’s No Deals Policy on violent crimes.

Also today, a juvenile hearing for Kendall’s co-defendant, 14-year-old Terrance Jones, was scheduled for November 18th. Jones is charged with facilitation to commit first degree murder in the same case.
